Frequently Asked Questions

Fundamentals

What is an eSIM? +
An eSIM is a programmable SIM chip embedded in your device. Carrier profiles are delivered digitally via QR code rather than through physical card distribution. The technology is standardized by the GSMA under its Remote SIM Provisioning specification.
How do I verify eSIM compatibility? +
Navigate to Settings → Cellular on iPhone, or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager on Android. The presence of an "Add eSIM" option confirms compatibility. See our device guide for comprehensive model-by-model information.
Can I maintain my home number while using a travel eSIM? +
Yes. Dual SIM functionality allows simultaneous operation of a physical SIM (home number) and an eSIM (travel data). This is the recommended configuration for most travelers — your home number remains accessible for calls and banking authentication.

Plans & Data

What data volume is appropriate for a European trip? +
For a one to two week trip with moderate use: 10–15GB. For heavy use including frequent video conferencing: 20–30GB. Downloading offline maps and media on hotel Wi-Fi can reduce consumption by 30–40%.
Which countries are commonly excluded from European eSIM plans? +
Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and the United Kingdom are outside the EU and frequently excluded from plans marketed as "European." The Western Balkans (Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo) also require explicit verification. Always review the provider's country list before purchase.
Is hotspot tethering permitted? +
Most reputable providers permit hotspot tethering, but this must be verified explicitly in the plan terms. Some plans throttle hotspot data separately. If laptop connectivity is essential, confirm tethering is unrestricted before purchase.
What occurs when the high-speed data allowance is exhausted? +
The connection is throttled to a reduced speed, typically 128–512 kbps. Top-up data packages are available through most providers' applications. Configure data usage alerts in your device settings to anticipate the threshold.

Troubleshooting

My eSIM is not connecting after arrival. What is the resolution? +
Verify: (1) eSIM is designated as the active data line; (2) Data Roaming is enabled for the eSIM; (3) Toggle Airplane Mode; (4) Manually select a network in Settings → Cellular → Network Selection; (5) Restart device; (6) Contact provider support with your order reference.
Can an eSIM profile be transferred to a new device? +
eSIM profiles are device-specific and cannot be transferred directly. Contact your provider to request a new profile for the replacement device. Most providers accommodate this at no charge. Note that a factory reset will delete the installed eSIM profile.
